The Review: EAST Hong Kong

thereview-primer

Location – 6

EAST is in Swire Properties’ Taikoo Shing. City Plaza Mall is easily accessible via a connecting bridge. The Quarry Bay Business District and Taikoo Place is a 10-15 minute walk away.

If you are coming to the city for leisure, the hotel may seem like a light year away from all the interesting goings on in Hong Kong, but all that is really just a glide, and a train ride away. Getting to the MTR Island Line’s Tai Koo Station from the hotel’s front door merely takes 2 minutes.

Guest Profile

Considering EAST’s proximity to the Quarry Bay Business District, it is not surprising that expats make up a huge percentage of its check-in crowd. The hotel’s proximity to an MTR station, on the other hand, makes it appealing to families on vacation.

The Arrival – 5

EAST Hong Kong

Check-in was over in a jiffy. Nothing about it was memorable, but if you are the type who hates fussing over every little detail, you’ll like EAST’s demeanor and efficiency.

The Room – 6.5

EAST Hong Kong

We stayed in a Harbour View Queen Room. The room is furnished in a contemporary design. Being greeted with clean lines and neutral colors after going around the bustling city is quite soothing to the eyes.

At 28 square meters, the room has a work area, a small closet, a mini-pantry (equipped with an espresso maker), and an open bathroom. The closet has ample storage for a few day’s worth of work shirts and suits. The work area is a welcome, albeit expected, room feature. It would have been our favorite part of the room – second to the bed, of course – if the work lamp were working. For a hotel branding itself as a business hotel, it is quite strange to not find a well-stocked work desk. You’ll have to bring your own stapler, paper clips, and scissors. Standard hotel stationery is available, though.

The View – 10

EAST Hong Kong

Most people say that the view from EAST’s rooms is enough to convince you to stay – and boy, is it phenomenal! The night view is especially stunning. The lights glimmering in the distance will lull you to sleep. Just don’t drift off without rolling down the automatic privacy screen.

Passport Out Tip: Enjoy the view from your room, instead of heading up to rowdy rooftop bar, Sugar.

The Bed – 7

The bed is placed almost next to the window. (It feels as if EAST designed the room around the property’s million-dollar view.) Its fluffy and fresh sheets stayed fluffy and fresh ‘til departure.

In-Room Technology – 8

EAST Hong Kong

Apple-lovers would surely swoon at the Apple TV installed in-room. Besides that, there isn’t anything else that screams techie. Maybe, to compensate, EAST provides a smartphone equipped with unlimited data connectivity that you could take with you as you explore the city.

The Bathroom – 6.5

EAST Hong Kong

The bathroom is separated into three functional areas: toilet, shower area, and vanity area.

EAST is proud of its sustainability efforts. Elemis bathroom amenities are in refillable dispensers.

The mood lighting in the shower area creates a calming atmosphere – something to come home to after a long day. We wish the vanity area were treated with the same level of attention. Lighting in the vanity area might be a bit problematic for ladies perfecting their no-makeup makeup look and gents styling their undercuts.

Service

FEAST (Food by EAST) – 7

5

We enjoyed the semi-buffet breakfast set-up, complete with an extensive list of made-to- order options. Buffet options included cereals (they have muesli!), fresh fruits, and bottled pressed juices. Trust us when we say you must try their bottled pressed juices!

Just a word of warning: FEAST can get crowded, especially at breakfast; be prepared to overhear fellow guests’ conversations.

Overall Service – 7

EAST’s front-desk concierge was average. The staff were helpful on certain occasions, but don’t overextend when their help doesn’t seem necessary.

Looking back, it was the kind housekeeping staff, thoughtful porters, and lively breakfast attendants (at FEAST) that made our stay memorable. Their constant attention and quiet dedication somehow made us feel comfortable.

The Departure – 6.5

Concierge was deserted at the designated check out time. Check out didn’t take much time – which is a huge plus.

Final Thoughts

For a hotel identifying itself as an upmarket lifestyle and business hotel, EAST comes off as rather utilitarian. We were expecting a vibrant, light-hearted service, but not an offhand way of going about things.

The hotel’s sustainability efforts are commendable, but being green and efficient should not compromise customer experience. We hope sustainability and efficiency are not simply buzzwords.

stayed in october, and i could say the same.
service is a bit bland, if i may be blunt. nothing special, but ok for a business traveler.

Sure this hotel needs improvement here and there, but I think it’s an ok hotel. I’d stay here if I had to work somewhere near the area.

Honestly, it was ok. It has the bare essentials. Service can be a little off, but other than that I’d stay here again.

Basic business hotel that caters to expatriates. You should check out the Upper House next time!

Their rooms are clean and modern, but no bathtub.
The room was a bit small, and might seem a little too close to neighboring buildings.
Honestly, this is the only choice in this area. But still good as you can have a wonderful night view.

I have stayed at this hotel many times and I would say that the service experience really depends on the staff you meet. Sometimes it would be bad, and rude, sometimes it would be impeccable.
