Rothenburg ob der Tauber was a fortress city during medieval times. You will most likely find your way here by tracing Bavaria’s Romantische Straße. From the Autobahn, you will see the town standing atop a plateau in all of its old world splendor – with its fortifications and lookouts towering above everything else.
Pulling into the parking lot, you will feel as though you jumped right into a Grimm fairytale, or right out of a time machine. The streets are cobbled. Half-timbered buildings and red-roofed houses stand amongst clock towers, defensive towers, and church spires. Nutcrackers, wooden toys, and Schneeball are sold on the main street.
Looking down from the Rathausturm, you can almost make yourself believe you are not in the 21st century.
Rothenburg’s metropolitan neighbors, Frankfurt am Main and Munich, may be heading towards the future in dizzying speed, but this town remains stuck in a romanticized past within time held still.
