Surrounded by cloud-capped hills, towering pagodas, and grandiose gardens, the whole complex is reminiscent of traditional Chinese paintings. Its beauty is such that it has influenced the works of several Chinese poets. One of whom was the famous Su Donggo of the Song Dynasty. He compared West Lake to Xi Zi, one of the four beauties in ancient China, in these oft-quoted lines:

Ripping water shimmering on a sunny day,
Misty mountains shrouded by the rain;
Plainly or gaily decked out like Xizi;
West Lake is always alluring.

According to folklore, West Lake had laid witness to the eternal love of Bai Suzhen and Xu Xian. The Legend of the White Snake – one of China’s earliest romantic myths – is so well known, that the lake complex has been considered to be one of the most romantic spots in China since ancient times. Nowadays, a casual stroll or a leisurely private boat ride seems to be the way to go for most couples visiting the famous shores hoping that, maybe, they will find everlasting love in the person next to them.
